Welcome Karolien

Welkom Karolien

We’re excited to introduce Karolien, the newest graphic designer on the LX Studio team! 🎉

Karolien earned her degree in Product Development at the University of Antwerp and also completed a Graphic Design course with a specialisation in Brand and Packaging Design at Luca School of Arts Ghent. With her passion for product design, branding, packaging and her eye for detail, she brings fresh, creative energy to our team. We're looking forward to creating impressive projects together with Karolien. Welcome on board, Karolien! 👏

What attracted you to working at LX Concept?

“After focusing solely on graphic design for a while, I noticed that my interest in product development had somewhat faded into the background. I missed working with my hands and the tangible aspect of design. It’s not always easy to combine all your different passions, but at LX Concept I was lucky to find the ideal place where my love for graphic design, branding, print, packaging and product design all come together perfectly.”

Can you tell us a bit about your background and experience in graphic design?

“During my Product Development studies, I quickly discovered my passion for visually shaping projects, such as designing reports, posters and other communication materials. Over time, this became my regular role: handling all the graphic layout. After graduating, I had to decide what I wanted to pursue next, and I chose to dive deeper into the graphic design field. That’s why I decided to study for an extra year at LUCA School of Arts, specialising in Brand & Packaging. It turned out to be the perfect combination of my interest in product development and graphic design, since packaging can be seen as a product in itself.

During that year, I did an internship at an advertising agency, where I worked as a graphic designer for the first time. I contributed to projects for brands like Martini, Bacardi and Bombay. I’m incredibly happy I got to do this internship, as I learned so much and gained valuable experience.”

What is your all-time favourite quote?

Who is your biggest source of inspiration?

“I really look up to Sorelle Amore, an inspiring entrepreneur, photographer and content creator. Through her work, she motivates people to be creative and express themselves in a unique way. What resonates with me most is how effortlessly she combines art, entrepreneurship and travel, all while living a life centred around freedom and location independence.

What I admire most is her outlook on life. Her definition of happiness is incredibly inspiring to me: she lives each day as if it could be her last. That ‘carpe diem’ mindset is something I want to embrace even more myself.”

Which trends in the graphic design industry do you currently find most interesting?

“The role of AI is something I find incredibly interesting. While it’s often said that graphic designers will be replaced by AI, I don’t believe that’s the case. The graphic design landscape will undoubtedly evolve due to the rise of AI, but I see it more as a powerful tool than a replacement. Human intuition and the subtle cues we unconsciously pick up when viewing and interacting with a design remain something AI cannot grasp.”

What’s a fun fact about you that not many people know?

“I love painting still lifes with oil paint, and although many people may find still lifes a bit dull, I’m actually deeply fascinated by them. What draws me in is the hidden symbolism often embedded in the objects. It feels as if each still life tells a deeper story, just waiting to be discovered. That combination of simplicity and deeper meaning makes it incredibly compelling for me.”

Do you have a favourite design style or software you enjoy working with?

“What is a designer without their Adobe programmes?! For me, Photoshop, InDesign and Illustrator are indispensable. I use them every day and they’re like my creative playground, where I bring ideas to life, design and shape everything just right.”

Imagine this: a client asks for a design in Comic Sans. How do you respond?

“First, I would assess the overall look and feel the client is aiming for and compare it to the character of Comic Sans. This font is known for its playful and friendly nature, but it's often perceived as unprofessional, which is of course not ideal in professional or refined designs. If that’s not entirely clear to the client, I would place both options side by side visually to show how they clash. That way, it becomes immediately clear that it’s not the best match. Finally, I would always suggest a few alternative fonts so the client can instantly experience the difference and make a more informed choice.”
